　　他們結婚以後，男耕女織，相親相愛，日子過得非常美滿幸福。不久，他們生下了一兒一女，十分可愛。牛郎織女滿以為能夠終身相守，白頭到老。可是，王母知道這件事後，勃然大怒，馬上派遣天神將織女捉迴天庭問罪。這一天，織女正在做飯，下地去的牛郎匆匆趕回，眼睛紅腫着告訴織女：“牛大哥死了，他臨死前説，要我在他死後，將他的牛皮剝下放好，有朝一日，披上它，就可飛上天去。”織女一聽，心中納悶，她明白，老牛就是天上的金牛星，只因替被貶下凡的牽牛説了幾句公道話，也貶下天庭。它怎麼會突然死去呢？織女便讓牛郎剝下牛皮，好好埋葬了老牛。

　　正在這時，天空狂風大作，天兵天將從天而降，不容分説，押解着織女便飛上了天空。正飛着、飛着，織女聽到了牛郎的聲音：“織女，等等我！”織女回頭一看，只見牛郎用一對籮筐，挑着兩個兒女，披着牛皮趕來了。慢慢地，他們之間的距離越來越近了，織女可以看清兒女們可愛的模樣，孩子們了都張開雙臂，大聲呼叫着“媽媽”，眼看，牛郎和織女就要相逢了。可就在這時，王母駕着祥雲趕來了，她拔下她頭上的金簪，往他們中間一劃，霎時間，一條天河波濤滾滾地橫在了織女和牛郎之間，無法橫越了。

　　織女望着天河對岸的牛郎和兒女們，直哭得聲嘶力竭，牛郎和孩子也哭得死去活來。他們的哭聲，孩子們一聲聲“媽媽”的喊聲，是那樣揪心裂膽，催人淚下，連在旁觀望的仙女、天神們都覺得心酸難過，於心不忍。王母見此情此景，也稍稍為牛郎織女的堅貞愛情所感動，便同意讓牛郎和孩子們留在天上，每年七月七日，讓他們相會一次。從此，牛郎和他的兒女就住在了天上，隔着一條天河，和織女遙遙相望。在秋夜天空的繁星當中，我們至今還可以看見銀河兩邊有兩顆較大的星星，晶瑩地閃爍着，那便是織女星和牽牛星。和牽牛星在一起的還有兩顆小星星，那便是牛郎織女的一兒一女。

　　牛郎織女相會的七月七日，無數成羣的喜鵲飛來為他們搭橋。鵲橋之上，牛郎織女團聚了！織女和牛郎深情相對，摟抱着他們的兒女，有無數的話兒要説，有無盡的情意要傾訴啊！

　　後來，每到農曆七月初七，相傳牛郎織女鵲橋相會的日子，姑娘們就會來到花前月下，抬頭仰望星空，尋找銀河兩邊的牛郎星和織女星，希望能看到他們一年一度的相會，乞求上天能讓自己能象織女那樣心靈手巧，祈禱自己能有如意稱心的美滿婚姻和美麗的愛情，由此形成了七夕節。（牛郎織女一年一相會，天上一天，地下一年，所以牛郎織女天天相會）

　　這個故事藴含了母系氏族社會的核心價值觀，就是母系家族養育孩子，丈夫只能隔一段時間才能與妻兒團聚。由此可見其歷史之悠久。
